In short

XHandbook is a lightweight, local-first ECU knowledge navigator and modern alternative to legacy EHANDBOOK tools. It opens standard EHANDBOOK container formats (.ehb, .ehbcrypt, .ehbp) and interactive KAOM function models without requiring a floating license server. Built with a high-performance native Rust core, XHandbook bridges ECU function descriptions with live calibration data—resolving any documentation label directly to its A2L CHARACTERISTIC, MEASUREMENT, or AXIS_PTS definition, memory address, and conversion formula.

01

The ECU documentation and calibration disconnect

ECU function documentation often exists in massive static PDF manuals or heavy legacy container viewers that require dedicated corporate license servers. When investigating a control function, calibration engineers must manually search separate A2L files to locate the memory address and conversion formula for documented labels.

XHandbook unifies documentation and calibration data into a single, responsive desktop explorer that operates entirely offline.

02

EHANDBOOK container support and KAOM models

XHandbook reads standard .ehb, .ehbcrypt, and .ehbp container archives containing DITA documentation, SQLite metadata, and KAOM function graphs. It has been validated against real industry golden containers including HVR100 and FlexECU demo sets.

Interactive function graphs feature automatic layout, allowing engineers to trace signal flows from sensor inputs through controller algorithms to final actuator commands.

03

Bi-directional A2L symbol resolution

Clicking any label inside a document or model view displays an instant popup containing its ECU memory address, record layout, conversion method, units, and limits. Reverse lookup identifies every documentation section that references a given ECU parameter.

The bundled build-ehb utility allows engineers to convert standalone A2L files into self-contained documentation containers.

04

What we do not claim

XHandbook is an independent viewer compatible with open container archives; it is not affiliated with or endorsed by ETAS GmbH.

Encrypted containers (.ehbcrypt) require valid customer decryption keys; XHandbook respects cryptographic boundaries and does not bypass container security.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Which container formats does XHandbook open?

XHandbook opens standard .ehb, encrypted .ehbcrypt, and partial .ehbp container archives.

Does XHandbook require a network license server?

No. XHandbook is completely license-server-free and operates as a standalone native desktop application.

Where can I download the complete XHandbook PDF technical brief?
