Hexx Technical Brief
A2L-aware ECU flash binary editing, interactive 3D calibration surface manipulation, and automated checksum calculation.
In short
Hexx is a high-precision, A2L-aware ECU binary and hex editor designed for embedded calibration engineers. By pairing raw binary images (Intel HEX, Motorola S19/S37, raw BIN) with ASAM A2L description files, Hexx translates raw hexadecimal memory addresses into named calibration characteristics, curves, and 2D maps. Engineers can inspect and modify parameters in physical engineering units (°C, mbar, RPM) with live 3D surface rendering, while the engine automatically recomputes memory checksums and enforces axis limits upon write.
01
The risk of raw hexadecimal memory editing
Standard hex editors display raw byte streams without functional context, forcing engineers to perform manual address arithmetic and endianness conversion. A single miscalculated byte offset can corrupt adjacent tables or invalidate flash checksums, rendering an ECU unbootable.
Hexx resolves this risk by linking memory images directly to A2L symbols, ensuring that edits occur within structured engineering parameters rather than anonymous bytes.
02
Symbol-aware memory decoding and 3D visualization
When an A2L description is loaded alongside a binary image, Hexx decodes memory records into scalar values, 1D lookup curves, and 2D calibration maps. Modifying values in physical units updates underlying flash bytes in real time.
Interactive 3D wireframe plots allow engineers to rotate, inspect, and smooth calibration surfaces visually, ensuring smooth transitions across engine and inverter operating points.
03
Checksum-safe write pipeline and binary diffing
Hexx automatically detects checksum algorithms and CRC regions defined in the ECU image. Upon saving modifications, checksum blocks are recomputed automatically to ensure flash integrity.
A side-by-side binary diff engine highlights modified addresses, shifted records, and altered calibration characteristics against reference baseline files.
04
What we do not claim
Hexx is an offline binary and map editor. It does not contain built-in physical ECU flashing drivers and does not connect directly to vehicle bootloaders via OBD.
Checksum recalculation relies on supported algorithms and memory layouts; proprietary or custom encrypted bootloader signatures must be verified with your target OEM flash tools.
Questions
Frequently asked.
What binary formats does Hexx support?
Hexx supports Intel HEX (.hex), Motorola S-record (.s19, .s37), and raw binary (.bin) files paired with ASAM A2L (.a2l) descriptions.
Can Hexx run air-gapped without an internet connection?
Yes. Hexx is offline-first and runs locally as a native desktop application with zero data egress.
Where can I download the complete Hexx PDF technical brief?
The complete technical brief is available for direct download at https://vehiclelab.in/resourses/market/hexx-brief.pdf.
